“And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap..."
As I write this, Christmas is only a few days away. I really ought to be quoting scripture along the lines of the Word becoming flesh, and celebrating the birth of the Prince of Peace. But the truth is, the words of the “Night Before Christmas” poem are running through my mind as I contemplate the beginning of a new year, and the topic of health and fitness.
The Advent and Christmas season can be so busy it is all too easy to rush right up to Christmas Day before we take the time to pause, and truly celebrate the reason for the season. Taking time to rest and listen for the voice of the Holy One is the first step toward a healthier 2019.
Before you set your goals and resolutions for 2019 (if you do that sort of thing—I do!), I suggest you settle down for a long winter’s nap, and time to meditate on the gift of the Christ born among us. There will be plenty of time for lists and resolutions in the days ahead. For now, let your Spirit find solace and refreshment from the Good Tidings of Great Joy we have heard.
